  The tranquility, the evergreen environment, the kindness of the people and the slow pace of life are appealing to many. Serra de Monchique is a wide range of steep beautiful, wooded hills and valleys that stretch across the northern Algarve and in to the southern Alantejo, from São Marcos de Serra to Aljezur. Historically, it formed a natural barrier between the peoples of the Algarve and the rest of Portugal. The highest mountain in the Algarve measures 902 meters above sea level and from the Foia lookout point you have a fantastic view of the coast all the way to Faro.
  The city of Monchique is small and unpretentious, a hillside cascade of white houses around the central point, the church. The narrow, cobbled streets in the city´s historic center are lined with restaurants and cafes and on the main square there are several nice fountains. One of the fountains consists of a so-called Moorish water wheel, another trace of a bygone era. Tourism and crafts are two of the largest sources of income in the area. Monchique is also known for its honey and the good Medronho, a distillate made from berries from the famous tree. How about a day trip through the beautiful hills and valleys that ends with a fantastic meal and a glass of Medronho!
