Descripción de la ubicación
Portimão is located in the western part of the Algarve and is one of the larger cities on the coast, with approximately 70,000 inhabitants. The city is sheltered along the banks of the Rio Arade, which once served as the sea entrance to Silves, then the capital of the Algarve. The Greeks, Phoenicians, and Carthaginians were all early trading partners before the Moorish occupation in the 12th century, and the harbour flourished.
It was not until 1924 that the city became known as Portimão, and until the 1980s the city had a large fishing industry. Today, tourism is the main source of income, and in the beach areas there are hotels and apartments for rent for holidaymakers. Portimão offers a wide selection of restaurants, cafés, and bars, and the city has retained its old charm down by the Zona Ribeirinha, where old buildings and local fish restaurants line the small narrow cobbled streets.
On the main avenue Alameda and in the Aqua Shopping centre, visitors can find bargains on clothes, shoes, and home décor.
Perhaps the most attractive part of the city is the promenade that runs along the riverfront from the marina to the bridge.
Naturally, Portimão is best known for the fantastic Praia da Rocha, one of the most impressive sandy beaches on the Algarve coast. In the eastern part of the beach are the remains of the 17th-century fortress, Forte de Santa Catarina, whose terraces offer magnificent views over the beach and the river.
