The fishing village of Alvor is located at the river outlet of Rio Alvor. Although the earthquake wiped out most of the traditional Moorish village in 1755, you can still see remnants of Alvor´s history in places like the 16th-century Igreja Matriz with it´s beautiful Manueline arches and pillars. Despite a steady development since the beginning of tourism in the 1960´s (especially on the east side), the buildings are mainly low and Alvor retains its charm with the narrow cobblestone streets leading down to the harbor at the lagoon. The riverbank in Alvor is lined with palm trees and several nice beach bars with spacious outdoor cafés where you can enjoy the endless summer days of the Algarve. The riverbank must be one of Alvor´s most idyllic environments. Here you can see the fishing boats coming and going while enjoying grilled fresh fish at one of the many restaurants. Alvors largest beach, Praia de Alvor, is only a short walk away and is a long sandy beach with sand dunes. The eastern end of the beach, which offers some protection from some large rock formations is called Praia de Três Irmãos. There are also several hotels on this side of town. Even at the height of the season, there is plenty of space on the beach for you to lie down and relax. If you want a good lunch, there are several restaurants and snack bars along both beaches.
